APRIL 2012
National Poetry Month began it's inspiring movement 16 years ago following the much success of February's Black History Month and Women's History Month in March. In 1995 the Academy of American Poets convened a group of publishers, librarian, booksellers, literary organizations and teachers and poets along with many other groups to elevate another great month to celebrate poetry! Combining the month to be designated to poetry and the love and celebration of the gift of rhyme, reason and imagination of words in verse. The very first month of the celebrating national poetry was held in 1996.
The Academy of American Poets distributed 100,00 free books of poetry in 1998 from New York to California and at that time on April 22, 1998 President Clinton and the First Lady hosted a gala at the White House with featured then Poets Laureate Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass, and Rita Dove. Later in 2001 poets were feature of the American postage stamps. Langston Hughes was one selected as receiving the most votes. The stamp was available for sale in January 2002.
The special purpose of this month is to write a poem a day everyday in April. Publishers sometime are overwhelmed with the volumes of books that become available during the month long celebration. Although the month is a National Celebration, the account of it's notability has spread to International proportions. Writers and poets express all over the world in remembering the month of the spoken word, and the contagious writings of poems. Amatuer or professional poets give out their expressions of poems.
The celebration of National Poetry Month has grown within it's 16 year of writings and there seem to endless days of poetry writers to come.
